Who would have thought it?

If you look at the modern day poker player, they look nothing like the stylish gamblers of the past. Jeans and t-shirts as well as sweats have become the standard outfit for most players as they try and make their fortunes. Fortunately there are a few ladies out there that are still rocking a sense of fashion and proving that you can play good while looking good at the tables.

Liv Boeree is not just one of the hottest female players on the circuit, but also one of the most successful with over £2.25 Million in earnings. She does this while keeping a style all her own. Being a former rocker, she likes to mix things up in her outfits, wearing a outrageous print or screen printed top with jeans one day and showing up in a stunning red split-let dress. Her style caught the eye of more than just the community, allowing Liv Boeree to pose for Maxim back in 2010.

Sam Trickett is atop the English all-time money list in poker and #2 in poker history with over $19.83 Million in tournament winnings. To see him play at the table, you would mistake him to be much older than 26 as he brings an “old school” air to the table regularly dressed more like James Bond out of Casino Royale than a modern day poker player. When he is “dressed down”, he seems to have an infinity for deep v-neck tees.

Many of you may know Victoria Coren from Only Connect on BBC Four, but Victoria has been a long time poker player, writer, and presenter and has won over $1.7 Million in poker events. Victoria’s style is as varied as her game. One day she can show up looking like a Texas cowgirl, one day looking like she is ready to conduct daily interviews with contestants and the next day show up in a complete leopard print outfit. This woman of many talents has the outfits to match.

I have a feeling 2013 will be remembered by creatives in the beauty industry as the year of the nail art evolution. From leading fashion brands like Chanel down to high street super brands like Topshop & H&M, everyone under the sun was and still are going gaga for the trend. Just like hair & makeup – nails are a BIG a part of the overall look and can add to the mood of an image. I took some time to ask some of THE top nail technicians of the moment to share their top tips, tricks and product recommendations. Take note!

The Illustrated Nail @illustratenail

What are your top nail products? Couldn’t live without just absolutely LOVE?
I can’t live without Seche Vite top coat or CND Solar Oil. Nails Supreme nail art pens and Colour Club striping brushes are my favourite.

What was your favourite nail trend for s/s13 nail art?
A modern take on the French manicure.

Any tips for those of us nail art newbies who want a cool looking, not too complicated DIY nail art?
There are some amazing new products out for DIY nail art that are really simple and easy to use. Try Ciate foils for an easy but effective graffitti foil effect or try out the many glitter and texturised polishes from Nails Inc from feathers to leather and stick on skulls! Nails Inc have also just launched press on nails called Bling It On Crystaltastic which I designed for them. They are easy to use press on nails with on trend designs and Swarovski crystals, instant nail art!

Elegant touch nail wraps are also simple to use and now they come with added embellishments so you can create you’re own nail art on too of the nail wrap.

Who do you look up to in terms of nail artists?
There are some amazing nail artists in New York…the lovely Ami Vega and Naomi Yasuda, Fleury Rose and from Japan Disco Nail.

Any nail art tips or tricks of the trade you’d be willing to share?
For perfect stripes clean your brush inbetween lines. Break patterns down in to shapes and draw the design out on paper first to make things easier.
Steady your hand on a flat surface when using nail art pens. Use a paint brush dipped in nail varnish remover to clean up any accidents. Always finish with a good quality top coat like Seche Vite, it really finishes the nail art!

Effy Nails @effy_nails

What are your top nail products? Couldn’t live without just absolutely LOVE?
OPI Nail Envy to strengthen nails, OPI Avoplex Cuticle Oil To Go, CND Solar Oil

What was your favourite nail trend for s/s13 nail art?
Fave nail trend for ss13 is neon! Was a bit unsure of the neons coming out but as soon as I put them onto nails that was it! Colours to suit all skin tones and if you want a more subtle look, create a half moon or tip on a nude nail and they’re even more tempting!

Any tips for those of us nail art newbies who want a cool looking, not too complicated DIY nail art?
Practise polka dots and leopard print first and gradually build up from those. Polka dots may look simple but its actually harder than you might think to get those little dots in order and all of the same size!

Who do you look up to in terms of nail artists?
The Illustrated Nail and Madeleine Poole are on the top of a long list of favourites! I love Madeline’s simple clean cut style and The Illustrated Nails perfect detailed designs.

Any nail art tips or tricks of the trade you’d be willing to share?
Be inventive with what you use! If you’re just getting into nail art or not ready to invest in the tools of the trade then Kirby grips and blunt pencils make great dotting tools!

Love Bang @lovebangnails

What are your top nail products? Couldn’t live without just absolutely LOVE?
SECHE VITE TOP COAT… Without a doubt. It’s the best topcoat ever because I’m so impatient I don’t have time to wait around and it dries so quickly – it does exactly what it says on the tin, also it flattens and smoothes out nail art too, gives it a lovely finish.A DECENT NAIL BUFFER… Just so you can start painting on a smooth, clear and clean canvas. It’s always great to create some nail art on some nice, fresh nails it makes the job more easier.

What was your favourite nail trend for s/s13 nail art?
I don’t really look at sites/blogs for nail trends, I tend to look at fashion shows to see a nice print where I can get inspiration from! However, WAH came up with a design of magnified details of a bandana print which was pretty eye catching.

Any tips for those of us nail art newbies who want a cool looking, not too complicated DIY nail art?
Simplicity is key. Ombre is so subtle and effective not to mention so easy to do – start of by choosing two nail polishes of the same colour but different tones (dark pink, light pink) – paint all your nails with the darker tone first, wait for them to dry and use a make up sponge to dab on the lighter colour from the tip of the nail. Finish off with Seche Vite top coat so that the colours blend in together!

Who do you look up to in terms of nail artists?
I admire the work of a lot of nail girls but the one person I personally love as an artist and as a friend is Boom Nails. A very, very hard-worker and she’s so humble about her success!!

Any nail art tips or tricks of the trade you’d be willing to share?
DO NOT LET THE NAIL PEN CONTROL YOU, CONTROL THE NAIL PEN!!

Rude Nails @rudenails

What are your top nail products? Couldn’t live without just absolutely LOVE?

Without a doubt number 1 is Seche Vite topcoat, an amazing product especially for the nail artist as it can be applied to wet paint and drives very quickly!

A descent makeup brush to use to clean up around the nail if any mistakes were made!

Supreme nail pens as they are one of the best nail pens around for me personally!

Polish thinner is a must for me, cant be painting nails with gloopy paint! you need a nice smooth consistency!

Last but not least a good nail polish of course! for me i personally like to paint with essie and OPI!

What was your favourite nail trend for s/s13 nail art?
Monochrome was my favorite nail trend! I liked to do the checkboard print in monochrome!

Any tips for those of us nail art newbies who want a cool looking, not too complicated DIY nail art?
Effeminately the checkerboard monochrome, its straight forward, simple and looks cool! just practice that steady hand for accurate line work!

Who do you look up to in terms of nail artists?
I’m a fan of Ghetto Nailz! There style is sikk! and they use nice bright colours in there work! they have a unique style which i like!

Any nail art tips or tricks of the trade you’d be willing to share?
Yes once I learned as I started was to use a makeup brush for any mistakes you make around the edges of the nail plate, just erase away with the brush dipped in acetone! this is a must when you are starting out! so go get a good brush and enjoy!

So there you have it – all you need to know to get yourself inspired and create some amazing nail art.

As a nail art newbie myself and finding myself more and more into this creative boom I’ve picked up a few favorites along the way too

Lush Lemony Flutter – Cuticle Cream

Perfect for keeping cuticles conditioned and smells like lemon cheesecake! With lemon infusion, shea butter, mango butter and soya oil this is not only great for cuticals but also dry skin areas. In LOVE. Lust have!

Nail Rock – Nail Kawaii – Frou Frou & Nail Wraps

These are adorable. Nail Rock do a range of various nail kawaii to decorate with and can be applied either ontop of wet polish or attatched with nail glue provided. Nail Wraps are also a life savour and quick on set. I’m loving the metallic transfers!

After those famous white Y fronts featured in the Dolce & Gabana fragrance campaign back in May 2007, and after over 11 million online hits, David Gandy stormed the male model scene, becoming an international icon of men’s style. So of course, it’s no secret that David Gandy is popular with the ladies, so fellas, if you can’t beat him, you may as well join him! White Y fronts on a boat in the Mediterranean optional…

Last month the Essex born Supermodel Gandy posed for Massimo Dutti, showing summer the way in a pair of smart cotton Bermuda shorts. With the sunshine just around the corner, it’s time to shed on light on those legs with some Bermudas. For work or play, the Bermuda short is a timeless wardrobe staple that keeps kicking its way back summer after summer, and for a reason!

1. Paul Smith – £127 // 2. Mango – £19 // 3. farfetch.com - £137 // 4. J. Crew – £35 // 5. GANT – £49 // 6. farfetch.com – £146 // 7. farfetch.com – £131 // 8. Hudson Jeans – £85

Unfortunately gents, trends; they come; they go. However, the Bermuda short truly is a style investment worth making. This summer season light power blues and pastel colours are big style statements. The powder blue Paul Smith tailored cotton Bermuda shorts are a particular favourite of mine – a preppy-cool must-have. The Chino style Bermuda shorts in a light green Peppermint hue is another option if you’re looking for a more kick-back and relax casual summer short. Teaming either of these style picks with a shirt or a button-up polo top will ensure you’re a bang on-trend man about town, guaranteed! For the finishing touches, I’d recommend a cool silk or linen scarf and a pair of suede Moccasins for a suave and sexy summer weekend look.

Trainers, sneakers…anything that is sporty instantly reminds us its athletic. Do we agree?

Choosing the right pair of trainers can be difficult. We walk in the store looking for trainers and all we can visualise is…sportswear trainers. We think: “Now how do we wear these?” ” This looks too sporty and designed for athletes”…been there, done that! Its pretty stressful. We question a lot when buying trainers and would love a pair that are more fashion than sport.

But lets have no fear now as the high streets have creatively transform the way we can wear trainers with a bit of a kick of fashion style. (so we don’t look like we’re dressed up off to the gym!)

9 individual styles picked for the ladies who can wear these trainers for casual day wear to a fashionista stand out from the crowd look. From the plain Keds to Converse elaborative graffiti prints then to a more cute girly bow ties and to the sophisticated ones, we have it here for you!

My personal favourite has got to be the high top wedges by Zara (Blue with print) it changes a whole new perception of what we used to call ‘trainers’ as we girls can wear a trainer that has a heel! What all girls love from shoes. Sport these pair of high tops with a pair of shorts or leggings and a simple graphic print jumper or oversize tee and you have a very casual yet stylised look of the day!

Now for the fashionistas who adore a bit of sparkle and sheen to their style, Nine West high heeled trainers will look great with a sheer maxi skirt and a shimmery (or plain) print vest! Again, minimal yet in trend with the streetwear x couture look.

So, trainers aren’t too sporty after all!
